Family Motel screening at the NFB CINEMA, Aug 7 to 12

Toronto, Ontario (July 25, 2008) -- As part of its summer cinema program, the NFB Mediatheque will screen Helene Klodawskys powerful and improvised alternative drama Family Motel, an original narrative of one woman’s struggle to protect her family, from August 7 to 12.

A vibrant and contemporary feature drama fuelled by a trio of remarkable debut performances, Family Motel charts one eventful summer in the lives of Ayan and her girls as they confront life on the edge.

Headstrong Ayan, a refugee from Somalia, has big dreams. New to Canada, she’ll show anyone she can provide for her family. Still, it’s difficult to keep it all together. On top of the soaring rent, her daughters, 16-year-old Nasrah and 13-year-old Leila, need braces. And even working two jobs as a cleaner, it’s tough to find enough money to send to her anxious husband and two sons still stuck in East Africa.

Drawing upon a vivid palette of atmospheres and emotions, Klodawsky and cinematographer Germán Gutiérrez craft a richly detailed urban drama. Somali-Canadian rap artist K’naan and composer Bertrand Chenier contribute a score rich in colour and rhythm. This film is directed by Helene Klodawsky and co-produced by Instinct Films (Ina Fichman, producer) and the National Film Board of Canada (Ravida Din, producer). For more information on the film please visit www.nfb.ca/familymotel

Family Motel will screen at the NFB Cinema August 7 at 7 PM, August 8 at 7 PM, August 9 at 3 PM, August 10 at 1 PM, August 12 at 7 PM.

Check out the hottest new films from the NFB at the NFB Cinema in the heart of the Entertainment District at 150 John Street (corner Richmond St. W). $6, $4 for students, seniors and NFB members. www.nfb.ca/mediatheque

Do Organizations have a role in Work/Life Balance?

A recent study of 1,508 Canadians, published by the Desjardins Financial Security Group, suggests that organizations had better get involved in helping employees balance their work and life priorities if they don’t want to create resentment and stressed-out, disengaged employees.

The Canadian study published last month revealed that family, honesty and good health are the values most important to Canadians—while work and money were among the least important.

What’s more, although many Canadian workers used to brag about working long hours and being tremendously dedicated to their jobs, today almost 80% of workers do not consider themselves workaholics. Although companies are implementing programs to promote work-life balance, such as formalized flex-time and telecommuting, some 65% of Canadians feel that their values at their workplace are not in tune with their personal values. Just 25% say their workplace “walks the talk” when it comes to balance.

Tax-Free Savings Accounts

submitted By Ingrid Rinaldi, CA, CFP

Manulife Securities Inc.

It’s not often that Canadians find good news in a federal budget, but in the February 2008 budget, good news came to all Canadians in the form of the tax-free savings account (TFSA).  This is a broad measure that will encourage the overall savings rate of the Canadian population because it applies to all Canadian taxpayers over the age of 18.

Records are Crucial for automobile deductions.

Deducting automobile expenses is a sizeable tax break, but you must keep records to substantiate your claim.  "If your circumstances match any of the following situations," say... of BDO Dunwoody LLP Chartered Accountants, "you should be maintaining automobile tax records"
